Way with Words: Vacillate

It all started in college. I was studying broadcast journalism and was enrolled in a radio class. I had to learn about how sound waves traveled. That's when the words vacillate and oscillate entered my vocabulary. All these years later, I still use them.

When I use them am I referring to sounds waves? No. I like the vibe of the words. The feeling of the motion. Quite often I compare them to my insecure decision-making skills. My favorite dictionary Merriam-Webster defines vacillate as "to waver in mind, will, or feeling : hesitate in choice of opinions or courses". Nailed it!

As a writer, I have to strive to be better. To learn new words and their meanings. In turn, the words can expand your reader's mind too. Not to mention, believe it or not, there may be more precise words encapsulating the vibe of what you're trying to say.

A great way to start is when you hear a word that you find interesting look it up. Then start using it in sentences. For word nerds, it's a fun little challenge that sharpens your writing skills and vocabulary. And you sound smarter too!
