Updating Writing for Gen Z

Gen Z is radically changing everything. Texting instead of calling, real time chats instead of e-mailing, and cutting off reading after 8 sentences is the norm. Now the word is out that blogging is going away. Studies show you only have 2 seconds before people scroll on in a social media site. Two seconds! I can't even utter a sentence in two seconds.

There is even a new form of writing called Flash Fiction. The name implies everything. These are uber short stories, hence the name FLASH Fiction. Max 1,500 words. Like you can read it in a flash. Shorter than a novella like A Christmas Carol. Yikes. I think we can see why relationships don't last anymore.

Admittedly, I scroll in 2 seconds. I skim emails, sometimes not reading past the first 2 sentences. And my attention span accommodates Flash Fiction. I do enjoy a good novel though. But wait, there's more! As I'm researching, I'm learning it gets worse.

According to Writers.com, there is also: Sudden fiction 750 words, Microfiction (Drabble) 100 words, Minisaga (Dribble) 50 words, and Twitterature 280 words. Funny, NONE of these were mentioned at the multiple writer conferences I've attended. Enough said? Yeah. I think so.

Even Dickens thinks we've lost it!

No wonder the English language is being butchered in text. And most kids can't write in cursive anymore. Why would they need to? Well enough of my confusing rant today. Let's face it times are changing and we can either become obsolete or WRITE the new wave. Write on, fellow writers!
