Line, What Line?

I love the saying, "There's a line and I think you just crossed it." Not sure why. It's sarcastic for sure. And witty. Whatever the reason, it makes me laugh. On the way to work this morning, I found a way to make it fit in my blog. Isn't that a writer's prerogative? I think so.

Anyway, I spent St. Patty's Day weekend in a national park with friends from high school. We discussed that very thing...line crossing. Our topic was how to dress over 50. Given the diversity of our group, it made the conversation quite interesting.

We had the medical professional who dresses like Martha Stewart. She's beautiful, classy, and what we used to call in high school "preppy". It's just the right look for her. Then we had the grandmother who still has long, brown locks and no signs of aging who dresses like a teenager. And wears it well.

Then, we have the vacillating hippie, me. I like it all as long as it looks good on me. I can go from Martha to teenager to hippie all in one week! Yeah, weird.

But we laughed and laughed trying to figure out what was over "the line" for our age. After deliberation, we determined more than one hole in the jeans is probably two too many. One hole could pass if your knees aren't too wrinkled, lol! I explained I had just made the same determination and gave away my one pair of jeans with multiple holes. That was a big step for me because those jeans had traveled with me!

Miniskirts were a maybe. Depends on the context. With tights in the winter? Yes. In the summer with wrinkly knees? Probably a no.

The hair topic was covered too. One of us - me - has already went au naturale and grown out the gray. Yuk. The other two still dye. We determined there's no end date to that one. Yet. It depends on what makes you feel good about yourself. Although one said her husband is urging her to grow hers out. Her being the teenage representation, I don't see that happening. And she's the grandma so she will fight that epitome 'til the end! Fight on, sister.

My personal feeling on this subject is a resounding "just be you!". Within reason of course. Because there is a line, and you don't want to cross it :-)
